Carbon footprint - how to understand yours

04 Aug 2010

Fact: the average UK home generates a carbon footprint measuring 1.37 tonnes per year.*

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere whilst going about our day-to-day business.

But what does that actually mean to you? Any idea of the potential impact on the environment or your finances?

Nope? Me neither.

Every time we book a flight, make a car journey, even when we turn the heating up a notch on a cool night, we're encouraged to consider our carbon footprint. We know we should try and be as carbon neutral as possible, but how do we even know how to measure our carbon footprint, never mind how we begin to offset it?

That's where AlertMe's Carbon Footprint application can help. We've developed a new tool that allows you to see at a glance just how much carbon you've generated - in terms we can all understand.  Check how energy-efficient your house is across days, weeks, months... even years.

You can even tell if you're above or below the national average.

That's not all. The Carbon Footprint tool then converts your carbon into easy-to-understand measures. For example, a daily spin of the tumble dryer generates about 300kg of CO2, which is equivalent to driving from Glasgow to Brighton and back. Not only that - it also costs you about £100 in electricity a year. Puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

So, you'll be able to measure your carbon footprint, understand what it means in real terms and take steps to reduce it.  And don't forget - a lower carbon footprint will often translate into savings - especially at home.

Have a play around with our demo version and see what you think. Send your thoughts and suggestions to feedback@alertme.com.

* That doesn't even include heating your home.
