Let there be light!

According to the papers today, PM David Cameron is considering
moving the clocks forward an hour all-year round so the UK can enjoy longer,
brighter evenings.
Scottish farmers aside, this is good news for the country.
Not only will we get to leave schools and workplaces while there's
still light in the sky, we will also have the opportunity to reduce the
national carbon footprint dramatically.
Whilst the impact on using lights in the morning will
largely be unaffected, just an extra hour of light means turning on the lamps an hour later in the evening. That alone results in a mind-boggling carbon saving of 114,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to driving 350 cars a million miles each.
Furthermore, and indulge us while we take a leap of
imagination here, if just one in ten of us decided to take advantage of the
extra light and stayed outdoors instead of going home to turn on the heating,
TV, lights etc - we could even be looking at saving nearly 2 million tonnes of CO2, or the equivalent of driving to those 350 cars about 18 million miles each.
Could the extra hour outside even have a knock-on effect on child obesity? What about SAD? The social implications are potentially huge! Come on Cameron, just say yes.
Let’s hope sunshine wins the day, eh?
