Otarian Soho restaurant

The world's first low carbon restaurant has opened in London's Soho.

Based in London and New York, Otarian promises the lowest possible impact on the environment, with local suppliers and a no air-freight policy. Unused oil is turned into bio fuel and packaging is recycled, composted or reused. Even the furniture and fittings are recycled and staff are encouraged to walk or cycle to work.

With no meat on the menu it might not be to everyone's taste. But when you consider that 16 kilos of grain is used to make just one kilo of beef and then take into account all that bovine methane contributing to climate change, it makes sense to cut down on your intake one or two days a week.

You can even pick up a carbon karma card (try saying that with a mouthful of vegetable noodles) to collect credits towards a free meal.

P.S. Apologies for the grey and dismal picture. Soho was grim at lunchtime today!
