Taking a good idea and running with it
There's nothing more satisfying than seeing someone take your lovingly crafted code... and doing something really cool with it. That's what some very clever people at Cambridge company ip.access have done. They've combined the AlertMe Energy service with their own femtocell technology to create a service that can automatically detect when phones enter or leave the house, thus turning off lights, televisions and other home appliances automatically when the house is empty. The service can also switch the services back on again when you get home.
There’s more. Your mobile would be used to turn appliances on and off remotely, helping you save energy and cash. It could even set automatic triggers, like turning the kettle on for a cuppa as soon as you get home. But before we all get carried away with the idea of our mobiles making us a cuppa, rubbing our feet and asking us about our day, take a look at some of the demos from ip.access on YouTube to get a feel for what's possible.
